Moving to www.montrosevisualartsguild.org

This blog has been useful to the guild while we were building our new website and getting it operational.  That website is up and running and we invite you to visit it and check it out.  At this time no more entries to this blog are planned.

Thank you for your interest in the Montrose Visual Arts Guild. http://www.montrosevisualartsguild.org/

October 2010 Newsletter

From the president:

As I write this the annual show is over and it was a success. We had excellent attendance, wonderful art and we received many compliments on it. Leslie poured heart, soul and body into it and she deserves a HUGE thank you from the Guild. Many others, including some of the spouses, worked behind the scenes to pull it all together and make it happen. From the earliest stages with the fund-raising and the prospectus and database through all the set up/take down, for those who manned the show itself, for the banner and publicity, for the hospitality at the reception and for our patron Sheree Wanner and the staff at Camelot Gardens: it wouldn’t have been possible without you. Thank you to everyone who entered and everyone who helped. It’s a major group effort, but you can feel very good about it!

I also want to let you know that our show judge, Carl Purcell donated one of his paintings to the Guild to be used for fund-raising. I’ll be bringing it to the October meeting so everyone can see it. This was quite a generous gift from him and I know you join me in deeply appreciating his kindness and support of our group.

We also have good news in that we have a nominee for all our positions for next year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and special thanks to Lael for her efforts in heading up the nominating committee! The list is included in the minutes being sent to you along with this newsletter. They will be officially announced at the October meeting pursuant to the bylaws of the Guild and the voting will be in November. Additional nominations can be made from the floor at that time, if there are any.

Our October meeting will be a bit different for us. We are holding a members-only potluck at noon on October 25. Once we’ve eaten and taken care of any necessary business that crops up, I’ll lead us in a
discussion about all the activities we’ve undertaken this year. It’s our chance to assess whether we liked an activity, if we thought it helpful, and if we want to repeat it next year. There’s almost always some way that an activity can be tweaked to be even better, so please reflect on the Guild’s activities this year and come prepared to give us your ideas.

Carl Purcell Workshop:

Carl’s demonstration at our show was extremely well-received. There has been lots of interest in a workshop by him in the spring and I’m pleased to tell you that it has now been scheduled!

The dates are March 24-25-26, 2011, which are a Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Save these dates NOW!

The workshop was planned in collaboration with Around the Corner Art Gallery and Pat and Bob will be handling registration. The cost will be $225 for the 3-day workshop with $100 due to hold your spot. I would encourage you to sign up promptly because there is a limit of 20 people and I think more than 20 have indicated interest in this.

I’ve asked Carl to cover drawing skills as they relate to painting and then on the 3rd day to switch to how you would apply those drawing skills to approaching a painting in any medium. So this workshop will be appropriate regardless of the medium in which you work. And it will be excellent for any level of painter.
Please call me or the gallery (249-4243) if you have any questions.

2011 Show:

Believe it or not we’ve already begun the preparations for next year’s show! The dates are September 30, October 1 and 2. The Patron’s Reception is the night of September 29. Artwork will be delivered on Wednesday September 28.

New for next year: thanks to Sheree Wanner at Camelot Gardens we’ve been offered the opportunity to do the clean up and set up on Tuesday September 27. That will make Wednesday the 28th, when we receive the show entries, a much, much smoother day.

Our judge for next year will be Jeanne Mackenzie. www.jeannemackenzie.com. She is an exceptionally well-known oil painter who has been featured in numerous art magazines and teaches workshops literally all over the world. And the good news is that she’s teaching a workshop for us before the show!

The workshop will be Sunday the 25th through Tuesday the 27th. Jeanne will be doing an introduction to the nuts and bolts of plein air painting along with a short plein air session to practice what we’ve learned. The last day she’ll be teaching about the appropriate use of photographs and how to create the freshness of a plein air piece with them, since that is what many of our members work with. Although Jeanne’s medium is primarily oils, this workshop, because of the subject matter, will be appropriate for any level of painter in any medium.

This workshop has also been planned in collaboration with Around the Corner Art Gallery and Pat and Bob will be handling registration. The cost for the 3 day workshop will be $175 as Jeanne gave us quite a price break.

Leslie will be doing a training session for show sitters on Monday the 26th. We will schedule that training session around the workshop’s lunch time so you can still sit the show and attend the workshop without missing anything.

It’s a bit early for signing up for this one, but you can mark it on your calendars and start saving for it. I’ll let you know when we open registration.

Demos:

Our November demonstration will be by Dani Tupper. In December we’ll be having our annual Christmas potluck/party.

Fund Raising:

The winner of Kathy Carter’s painting Canyon Sunset was our own Marty Simmons! Congratulations Marty and thank you again Kathy for donating the painting to the Guild. The framing was done for the Guild by Angela Roberts and we thank her, too!

We did have some notecard sales at the show, but we still have quite a few of them to sell. They make a wonderful gift, so remember birthdays and the holidays coming up. It’s $8 for a set of all 5 images or $2 for an individual card. They are available on Masterpiece Mondays and we’ll have them at the meeting on October 25th.

I’ve posted our current patrons on our website, our blog and at the bottom of this newsletter. We could use more patrons. Please support those businesses that have helped us and consider approaching a business you have a connection with to encourage it to become one of our patrons, too.

Art in Motion:

Please remember to let Geri know how many paintings you have at what business so she can get a correct listing. She’ll be turning this job over to our new Art in Motion coordinator in December and she needs to have things in good order so the switch can be made smoothly. 240-4616 gmgbates@msn.com

In addition, once the list is completed we will post it on our blog and our website. That gives you a bit of publicity.

During the next few months, please visit the location where your paintings are hanging. It’s your responsibility to see that they remain up on the wall and in good order. If you detect any issues, please let Geri know.

Art Instruction Videos:

We show an art instruction video on the first Monday of the month around 11 AM. This month we got things a bit out of sync with the show going on and I didn’t get the David Leffel video in time to show it. So we showed the November Sterling Edwards video instead. I will get the David Leffel video for the first Monday in November. Although the videos typically have demonstrations in one medium, the instruction given is usually beneficial in any media.

We are very fortunate to be able to show the video more than once. If you miss the first Monday or simply want to see the video again, please let me know. And, if you think of an artist you’d like to see in a video, please let me or one of the art instruction committee members know.

The video instruction committee will be meeting in the next few weeks to set up the schedule for the upcoming months and to move forward on the purchase of some videos. If you have a suggestion and haven’t passed it on, please let me know.

Upcoming Meetings, Kudos and Tidbits:

We had quite a few ribbon winners, including many blue ribbons, among our members at the annual show. Many of our members also won awards through the Montrose Arts Council, which judges the show separately from our judge, including Andrea LaPonsie who won their Best Amateur award. Frank Gauna and Jean Reed won People’s Choice awards and so did Frankie Hejny, whom many of you know. Heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to all our award winners!!

Our November meeting is the 22nd. The board will meet at noon and the general meeting will be at 1 PM. The demonstrator will be Dani Tupper showing us something of her swirling, colorful watercolors. Please remember that November has 5 Mondays and we meet on the 4th one, not the last one!!!!

Twyla Groswald and Roxanne Morris are in charge of November’s refreshments. Thank you Sybil Brannam and Leslie Rossman for the September refreshments. Sybil’s mints in the shape of an artist’s palette were a big hit both at the meeting and at the Patron’s reception.

Check out the Guild’s website to see the 4 member pages that are now up. You can have one, too, if you want one. Just get me about 6 images of your work and an artist’s statement/bio.

Please give me a call if I’ve missed something. So many people work behind the scenes each month to keep the Guild going strong and everyone’s efforts are appreciated. I don’t want to overlook anyone or anything that’s going on.

Reminders:

Ongoing: Masterpiece Mondays. Please come and draw or paint or whatever with friends from the Guild. 9 AM until around 2:30 PM. No major holidays fall on Mondays from now until the end of the year, so we will be meeting every Monday.

Oct. 11 and 25: 6-9 PM Life Drawing session with a live model at Around the Corner Art Gallery. $15 per session. 249-4243 for more information.

Oct. 13-Nov. 17: Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Beginning Calligraphy Class with our own Sharon Marolf. Contact Around the Corner Art Gallery for more information and to register. 249-4243

Nov. 10-12: Ann Templeton workshop. Information available through Around the Corner Art Gallery. There are still a few spaces available. The cost is $375. Ann has a new video out with 2 demonstrations on it dealing with the use of warms and cools in the landscape. 249-4243 for more information.

September 2010 Newsletter

From the president:
Lael VanRiper is heading our nominating committee for 2011. She has filled most of our positions, but still has a couple that are vacant and both are positions that are not particularly time consuming. We need a secretary to take minutes during our meetings. You take some notes, organize them when you get home and send them to me to get out to the members. If you come to meetings fairly regularly and could handle this, please let Lael know. 323-6639

We also need someone to handle publicity, which basically means functioning as the guild’s liaison with the newspaper. You provide the paper with information about any special events we run such as the Wine and Cheese event and the Show. You don’t have to write up the information; it is given to you by the person in charge of the event. We have an announcement in the paper about our meetings and the publicity person merely needs to see that it remains in the paper on a regular basis. Again, if you can take this on, please contact Lael.

Thank you to all those members who have agreed to continue in their current positions and to all who have stepped up to accept a new position.

As I write this, the show starts 3 weeks from today. Under the SHOW heading below there are a couple of IMPORTANT instructions. Please read them carefully and follow through on what you are being asked to do.

Many details concerning the show are coming together nicely and we have a good group of entries. Most of the September 27th meeting will be conducted by Leslie and will deal with specifics related to the show. She will be training us as to our responsibilities when we sit the show.

A couple of other reminders: if your donation for the silent auction at the Wine/Cheese event did not receive a bid it is waiting for you to retrieve it at Around the Corner Art Gallery. Please go get it.

And, on Masterpiece Mondays the coffee, tea and the cups, plates, napkins and so on are provided by donations. If you are using a cup, drinking tea, using a napkin you need to slip in a dollar or two every now and then to help cover the costs.
Show:

The show dates are October 1, 2 and 3. If you signed up to help on the 29th or to sit the show or to help take down the show please be sure you know what you signed up for and BE THERE ON TIME. We are counting on YOU!

You deliver your professional and non-professional entries on Wednesday September 29 from Noon to 2 PM ONLY. If you can’t make that time slot, get someone to bring your work for you and make sure you have your entry labels with your paintings or sculptures.

You deliver amateur and youth entries from 2 to 4 PM. Again, you need to be there only during those hours and if you can’t make that 2-hour period, you need to make arrangements with someone to do it for you.

Thursday September 30 at 9 AM is the demonstration by our show judge, Carl Purcell. It should last 2 or so hours. I’ve seen him demonstrate before and it’s well worth being there. We need about 30 folding chairs. IMPORTANT: Please call Leslie and let her know how many chairs you’ll bring. 964-4768 Be sure you’ve put some tape with your name on your chairs.

The actual judging will take place during the afternoon of Thursday the 30th. The reception will be from 6:30 to 8:30 that evening.

IMPORTANT: For the reception we need guild members to bring hors d’oeuvres and finger food—appetizers or sweets. No foods in crock pots or other equipment needing an electrical outlet, please. And nothing that needs a knife. We will have forks and little plates available. This is very important as we want to put on a good spread for our guests.

All guild patrons are receiving special invitations to the Patron’s Reception along with a card giving them a 10% discount on any art purchased that evening.

Demos:

In September our guest will be Virginia Columbo who will demonstrate how she makes her unique, creative masks. Our November demonstration will be by Dani Tupper.
Fund Raising:

Here is a note I received from Roxanne concerning the Wine and Cheese event. The MVAG 3rd Annual Wine and Cheese Event was held Aug. 28th at the Around the Corner Art Gallery. On behalf of the guild, I’d like to thank Bob and Pat Brown for generously donating the use of their lovely facility, including the use of wine glasses, and Bob the Bartender. I’d like to thank The Pour House for donating six bottles of fine wine, Mary Hager for doing the food shopping for us in Grand Junction, Pat Jeffers for donating specialty beer, The Uncompahgre Bed and Breakfast, Fifth Ave. Parties in Park Ave. True Value, Mina Voss Art Supply, Alpine Archeology Associates, Starbucks Coffee, and the Stone House for their donations for the auction. In addition, I want to thank all the guild members who donated all manner of artistic items for the silent auction. Your support of our guild is greatly appreciated. If I have forgotten to mention anyone, please accept my apologies. And let’s remember to patronize the businesses that support us.

This year ticket sales were low. Consequently, bidding on silent auction items was low. In that light, I am surprised and pleased to report that in spite of our low numbers, we raised a total of $770 from the event. Also, despite our lower numbers this year, the evening was a hit with people lingering, socializing and enjoying themselves.
So to all of you who helped and participated, Thank You!

We are still selling the drawing tickets for the beautiful painting Kathy Carter donated to the Guild. They are $1 a piece. See Debbie Bradley to get drawing tickets and a photograph of the winning painting so you can show your friends and family what they might win.

And we still have quite a few of the Guild’s notecards. They make a wonderful gift, so remember birthdays and the holidays coming up. It’s $8 for a set of all 5 images or $2 for an individual card. They are available on Masterpiece Mondays and we’ll have them at the meeting on September 27th.

And finally we still have our 2010 decals for sale. Remember that Patrons who make a $50 or more donation or donation in kind will receive one free. For Guild members they are $3 a piece or 2 for $5. Check out one of the cars flashing these bright, colorful stickers when you come to Masterpiece Monday. If you don’t have one yet, you might want to get yours now.
I’ve posted our current patrons on our website, our blog and at the bottom of this newsletter. We could use more patrons. Please support those businesses that have helped us and consider approaching a business you have a connection with to encourage it to become one of our patrons, too.

Art in Motion:

Most of the switching of artwork that was to take place at the end of August/beginning of September has been accomplished. Thank you to everyone who participated and did their part!

Geri needs to know who has what paintings at what businesses for the next 4 months until the next exchange. If you haven’t already done so, please call or email her and let her know. She can’t help you keep track of your work if she doesn’t know what you have where.

This month we showed a video by British acrylic painter John Hammond, and it is available if you want it played another time. October’s is one on still life painting by David Leffel and in November we’ll watch a watercolor video by Sterling Edwards.

And thank you to Susan Palmer who has volunteered to be our video librarian for next year.

Retreat:

Remember that the Guild’s Retreat at Camp Redcloud near Lake City is October 12-14. There are still openings, and spouses and friends are also welcome. If you’ve now found out you can attend, please let me know. The cost is $190 and includes 2 nights of lodging and 6 meals. We’ll arrive there Tuesday afternoon and you can hike, horseback ride, canoe, fish, sleep, read and oh yes…PAINT to your heart’s content. We’ll have all day Wednesday there and end the retreat after lunch on Thursday. We’ll be coming home late Thursday afternoon.

Upcoming Meetings and Tidbits:

Our September meeting is the 27th. The board will meet at noon and the general meeting will be at 1 PM. The demonstrator will be Virginia Columbo with her fabulous, creative masks. Don’t miss this one!

We extend our thanks to David Delo of Delta for his demonstration at the August meeting on pen and ink drawings enhanced by watercolor washes. He had some great ideas for those who travel and want nice remembrances of their trips.
Thank you Lael for yummy refreshments at the August meeting. Refreshments at the September meeting will be by Sybil Brannam and Leslie Rossman.
Check out the guild’s website to see the 3 member pages that are now up. You can have one, too, if you want one. Just get me about 6 images of your work and an artist’s statement/bio.

And finally, the October meeting will be a potluck for members only. After we feast and while we are enjoying our 2nd or 3rd dessert and sipping our coffee, we are going to take some time to assess or evaluate the various projects and activities the guild has undertaken this year. We’ll certainly discuss the show, but we also want to take suggestions on the Guild retreat, fund-raising projects, the Wine/Cheese event, Masterpiece Mondays, the Art Instruction Videos, Main in Motion, our internet presence, and Art in Motion.

I’m telling you this now and I’ll remind you again, so you can have some time to think about what you’ve participated in this year and what has or hasn’t worked well in your opinion. This is a chance for us as a group to determine what we’d like to repeat for next year and what we might want to tweak a bit.

Please give me a call if I’ve missed something. So many people work behind the scenes each month to keep the Guild going strong and everyone’s efforts are appreciated. I don’t want to overlook anyone or anything that’s going on.
Reminders:
Sept. 15: Entry deadline for WCWS members’ show at the Apple Shed. Open to entries in water media used like traditional watercolor.
Sept. 18 & 19: Plein air oil painting workshop with Barbara Churchley. Contact Around the Corner Art Gallery for more information. 249-4243.
Oct. 12-14: Guild retreat in Lake City. See Pat Jeffers for more information or to make a reservation.
Nov. 10-12: Ann Templeton workshop. Information available through Around the Corner Art Gallery. 249-4243

August 2010 MVAG Newsletter

From the President:

So far only one person has sent me photos so I can build a personal web page for that artist. The size of the Guild’s site is huge and it can handle images of many artists. Please, if you’d like to have an internet presence, send me about 6 images of work of yours with prices. I would also like to have a brief artist’s statement about why you do the work that you.

If this is all new and different for you, but you’re at least interested in it, talk to me about it so I can help you.

Please let me know if you have a personal website so I can post that on the blog and the website. So far no one in the guild has done that. Surely some of our members could benefit from a link with the Guild’s site!

Masterpiece Mondays are continuing throughout the summer and make a note that we will meet on Labor Day, too. Attendance may be low that day, but often people do not have picnics or family gatherings to go to and it’s fun to get together with friends in the Guild.

With an eye to the near future, it’s getting close to the end of the year and to the time when we nominate new officers and chair persons. Lael VanRiper has agreed to head our nominating committee. She may be contacting YOU to see if you can fill one of the vacant positions. Please give it serious consideration. We have lots of fun activities going on in the guild, but we can’t do all these things without a lot of volunteer effort. The nominees for our various positions will be presented at the October meeting and the voting takes place at the November meeting.

Demos:

Our demonstration at the August meeting will be by David Delo of Delta. He’ll be teaching us something about pen and ink drawing with watercolor washes. In September our guest will be Virginia Columbo who will demonstrate how she makes her unique, creative masks. Our November demonstration will be by Dani Tupper.

Main in Motion:

The Guild artists doing Main in Motion on August 19 are Elaine Johnson, Andrea La Ponsie and Bess Sprankle. If you’re in town that evening, stop by and visit. This is the last Main in Motion for the summer.

Fund Raising:

Mark your calendars and get your tickets! The Wine and Cheese event is 6-9 PM on Saturday August 28 at Around the Corner Art Gallery: wine, beer, soft drinks and hors d’oeuvres and a Silent Auction. Roxanne will tell us at the August 23 meeting the details on Silent Auction donations. Tickets are $15 for one person or $25 for two. Bring friends! We need to sell tickets to make this a successful fund-raising event.

Also, we are selling the drawing tickets for the beautiful painting Kathy Carter donated to the Guild. They are $1 a piece. See Debbie Bradley to get drawing tickets and a photograph of the winning painting so you can show your friends and family what they might win.

The first batch of the Guild’s notecards has nearly sold out. We are awaiting the proofs of the 2nd order and we hope to have the notecards themselves within a couple of weeks. The first batch turned out beautifully. They make a wonderful gift. It’s $8 for a set of all 5 images or $2 for an individual card. Roxanne will have more information on this at the August 23 meeting.

And we still have our 2010 decals for sale.

Show:

Let me know if you did not receive a prospectus. Remember that you can have up to a total of seven entries with no more than two entries in any category. Entries must be postmarked by Tuesday September 7.

The show dates are October 1, 2 and 3. The judge is Carl Purcell.

Remember that Leslie has asked anyone with folding chairs to let her know because we might need them.

Sign-up sheets for helping to set up the show and for show sitting are available on Mondays and will be at the meeting. Sign up if you can. Help is needed!

Art Instruction Videos:

We show an art instruction video on the first Monday of the month around 11 AM. The August video by artist Scott Christensen was well-received and we’ve already shown it a 2nd time. In September we’ll be showing a video by British acrylic painter John Hammond. October’s is one on still life painting by David Leffel and in November we’ll watch a watercolor video by Sterling Edwards.

We now have all our videos and equipment locked in a 2-drawer file cabinet that Debbie Bradley graciously donated to the Guild. One of the new positions for 2011 will be a video librarian. Please let Lael or I know if you would like that job!

Retreat:

Remember that the Guild’s Retreat at Camp Redcloud near Lake City is October 12-14. If you signed up, your 2nd payment of $95 is due by September 1.

During September I’ll have a waiver form for each person going to complete and we’ll talk about room assignments.

There are still openings. Right now 14 people are going on the retreat. Spouses and friends are also welcome.

Our August meeting will be the 23rd. Please note there are 5 Mondays in August and we meet on the 4th Monday. Our demonstrator will be David Delo of Delta doing pen and ink and watercolor wash.

If you missed the July meeting, you missed an especially fun demonstration on smoke painting by Twyla Groswald. Thank you very much Twyla!

Thank you to Mary Hager and Elaine Johnson for providing our July refreshments. The August meeting refreshments will be by Lael VanRiper and Sharon Marolf.

Kudos to Elaine Johnson and Larry Sudduth for winning both blue and red ribbons at the County Fair!

And we had quite a good showing at the Ouray Artists’ Alpine Holiday show. Stephanie Abbath, Pat Brown, Kathy Carter, Loretta Casler, Mary Hager, Tommie Howerton, Elaine Johnson, Sharon Marolf, Celie Matteson, Roxanne Morris, Barb Scheu and Claudia Wolff all had work juried into the Main Room. A special congratulation goes to Celie Matteson for winning the Ago Gallery Award. Tommie Howerton won an HM and sold a piece. Sharon Marolf and Roxanne Morris also won HM ribbons and Elaine Johnson sold one of her paintings.

Please give me a call if I’ve missed something. So many people work behind the scenes each month to keep the Guild going strong and everyone’s efforts are appreciated. I don’t want to overlook anyone or anything that’s going on.
