Kudos

Roxanne Morris, our fundraising chairperson has had 2 paintings juried into the Ouray Alpine Artists Holiday show and she won an Honorable Mention ribbon.  Congratulations, Roxanne!  And if you went to the County Fair you saw that Elaine Johnson and Larry Sudduth had ribbons--including blue ones!  Wonderful news!

June Meeting Minutes

Montrose Visual Arts Guild

June 28, 2010
General Meeting: at Meadow Lark Apartments, Montrose, Colorado. A quorum being present, President Pat Jeffers presided and called the meeting to order at 12:46 p.m following a pot luck luncheon.

Loretta Casler moved that the May 24, 2010, minutes from the general and board meetings and minutes from special board meeting on June 7, 2010, be approved as e-mailed or mailed to the members. Motion carried.

It was announced that the Western Colorado Watercolor Society annual show will be held at the Appleshed in Cedaredge in October. MVAG members are invited to enter water medium works in the nonjuried show.

It has been suggested that we have a committee to coordinate carrying MVAG members’ art to and from regional shows.

President Pat Jeffers wished a happy birthday to all who celebrated birthdays in the first half of the year.

President Pat Jeffers announced that an art instruction committee of herself, Nancy Shorter, Debra Bradley, Mary Hager, and Larry Sudduth will meet to recommend art videos for purchase by the guild.

Lael van Riper moved that we accept the quote through Philadelphia for global liability coverage beginning August 1. Motion was unanimously approved.

Twyla Groswold will present the July demonstration on smoke paintings. Each member should bring some paper of any kind to try the smoke painting.

Membership Chair Sharon Marolf will prepare a new membership list.

Workshops by Barbara Churchley on plein aire, September 18 and 19 through Around the Corner Art Gallery for $150, and by Ann Templeton November 10 - 12 were announced. President Pat Jeffers requested that Guild members with a spare bedroom which can be used by out of town artists during the Templeton workshop please volunteer.

President Pat Jeffers is trying to get Jeannie McKenzie as the judge for the Guild’s 2011 show. Members were reminded about the Around the Corner Art Guild show, Raining Cats and Dogs, beginning August 6.

The business meeting was adjourned at 1:22.

July Newsletter

From the President:

Please don’t forget to keep your newsletter—print it out if you need to—so you can refer back to it to check dates and times of events. I try to put the most important information about the time and date of the next meeting on the front page. Our new website is coming along, but in the meantime don’t forget that you can check our blog for Guild information, too.

Please let me know if you have a personal website so I can post that on the blog.

Masterpiece Mondays are continuing throughout the summer and make a note that we will meet on Labor Day, too. Attendance will likely be low that day, but often people do not have picnics or family gatherings to go to and it’s fun to get together with friends in the Guild.

A question of etiquette in giving critiques at Masterpiece Monday has arisen. First, remember that any critique is ONLY that one person’s opinion and it’s OK to disregard a suggestion completely or partially and to do things your way. You have artistic license! Second, if you are receiving an unasked-for or unwelcome critique you can let the person know that you’d rather work on the painting yourself right now, that you’re not ready for any suggestions at this point. You can also indicate that someone’s comment is “interesting” without making any commitment to change what might be something you’re very satisfied with.

If you are the person giving a critique, you should first try to make certain your opinion and suggestions are welcome. Especially for beginners, having a strong personality tell you what’s wrong with your painting can be intimidating and discouraging. Remember that some people do not want to know what could be changed and that’s OK.

The best critiques are ones that are requested, so be careful before you speak out.

Also, remember that you could be wrong! Or you could misunderstand the intent or direction of the artist so your comments might be off-base. Or your opinion of what looks great could differ significantly from the point of view of the artist and you could both be right, but just like a different appearance in a painting. A little humility about the worthiness of your suggestion is a good thing!

Don’t forget to find something positive to mention along with any changes you might suggest.

More could be said on this subject, but you get the idea. Always saying nothing more than that a painting is really nice, doesn’t help an artist grow. But wading into critiquing requires sensitivity and a light touch.

July Demo:
Twyla Groswald is doing our July demo on the subject of smoke painting. This is sort of a fun diversion and as part of her demo she will let us try it. You need to bring paper with you if you want to see how it works. Twyla has said that it can be any type of paper from regular photocopy paper to drawing papers to watercolor paper. And you can bring a variety if you want.

Main in Motion:
The Guild artists doing Main in Motion on July 22 are David Delo, Andrea La Ponsie and Larry Sudduth. If you’re in town that evening, stop by and visit. We’ll have our decals for sale, too. With several of us working together and answering questions from the public this is a fun event and it’s great exposure for the guild.

Fund Raising:
We had to reorder the Guild’s new decals because they were so popular and we sold out! The second batch has arrived and they are now for sale. Remember that Patrons who make a $50 or more donation or donation in kind will receive one free. For Guild members they are $3 a piece or 2 for $5. Check out one of the cars flashing these bright, colorful stickers when you come to Masterpiece Monday. If you don’t have one yet, you might want to get yours now.

Also, the images of our winning notecard entries are in Denver with the Office Depot printers as I write, and we hope to have the actual cards within a week. I’ll give you the prices once those decisions have been made.

And don’t forget the Wine and Cheese event August 27 at Around the Corner Art Gallery. More information to follow.

I’ve posted our current patrons on our new blog and at the bottom of this newsletter. We could use more patrons. Please support those businesses that have helped us and consider approaching a business you have a connection with to encourage it to become one of our patrons, too.

Show:
The show prospectus has been mailed. You should have yours by the time you receive this newsletter. Let Leslie know if you did not get one.

Please remember that we are experimenting with entering your work by category rather than by media. The 2D categories are: land/seascapes, portrait/figures, animals, flowers, still lifes, urban/rural scenes and abstracts. Sculptures are a separate category.

You can have up to a total of seven entries with no more than two entries in any category. Entries must be postmarked by Tuesday September 7.

The show dates are October 1, 2 and 3. The judge is Carl Purcell.

Sign-up sheets for helping to set up the show and for show sitting are available on Mondays and will be at the meeting. Sign up if you can. Help is needed!

Art Instruction Videos:
We show an art instruction video on the first Monday of the month around 11 AM. The video for August 2 is an oil painting video by landscape artist Scott Christensen. In September we’ll be showing a video by British acrylic painter John Hammond. October’s is one on still life painting by David Leffel and in November we’ll watch a watercolor video by Sterling Edwards. Although the videos typically have demonstrations in one medium, the instruction given is usually beneficial in any media.

We are very fortunate to be able to show the video more than once. If you miss the first Monday or simply want to see the video again, please let me know. And, if you think of an artist you’d like to see in a video, please let me or one of the art instruction committee members know.

Demonstrations, Upcoming Meetings and Tidbits:
Our August meeting will be the 23rd. Please note there are 5 Mondays in August and we meet on the 4th Monday. Our demonstrator will be David Delo of Delta doing pen and ink and watercolor wash.

Loretta Casler will be demonstrating at the Community Center in Ouray on Tuesday August 3rd at 2:30 PM as part of the Alpine Artists’ Holiday show. Pat Jeffers will be demonstrating in the same place on Friday August 6th at 10:30 AM.

Thank you to Mary Hager and Elaine Johnson for providing our July refreshments. The August meeting refreshments will be by Lael VanRiper and Sharon Marolf.

And thank you to those who helped label, seal and stamp the prospectuses. With so many helping the job was done in no time.

Please give me a call if I’ve missed something. So many people work behind the scenes each month to keep the Guild going strong and everyone’s efforts are appreciated. I don’t want to overlook anyone or anything that’s going on.
