October 2010 Newsletter

From the president:

As I write this the annual show is over and it was a success. We had excellent attendance, wonderful art and we received many compliments on it. Leslie poured heart, soul and body into it and she deserves a HUGE thank you from the Guild. Many others, including some of the spouses, worked behind the scenes to pull it all together and make it happen. From the earliest stages with the fund-raising and the prospectus and database through all the set up/take down, for those who manned the show itself, for the banner and publicity, for the hospitality at the reception and for our patron Sheree Wanner and the staff at Camelot Gardens: it wouldn’t have been possible without you. Thank you to everyone who entered and everyone who helped. It’s a major group effort, but you can feel very good about it!

I also want to let you know that our show judge, Carl Purcell donated one of his paintings to the Guild to be used for fund-raising. I’ll be bringing it to the October meeting so everyone can see it. This was quite a generous gift from him and I know you join me in deeply appreciating his kindness and support of our group.

We also have good news in that we have a nominee for all our positions for next year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and special thanks to Lael for her efforts in heading up the nominating committee! The list is included in the minutes being sent to you along with this newsletter. They will be officially announced at the October meeting pursuant to the bylaws of the Guild and the voting will be in November. Additional nominations can be made from the floor at that time, if there are any.

Our October meeting will be a bit different for us. We are holding a members-only potluck at noon on October 25. Once we’ve eaten and taken care of any necessary business that crops up, I’ll lead us in a
discussion about all the activities we’ve undertaken this year. It’s our chance to assess whether we liked an activity, if we thought it helpful, and if we want to repeat it next year. There’s almost always some way that an activity can be tweaked to be even better, so please reflect on the Guild’s activities this year and come prepared to give us your ideas.

Carl Purcell Workshop:

Carl’s demonstration at our show was extremely well-received. There has been lots of interest in a workshop by him in the spring and I’m pleased to tell you that it has now been scheduled!

The dates are March 24-25-26, 2011, which are a Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Save these dates NOW!

The workshop was planned in collaboration with Around the Corner Art Gallery and Pat and Bob will be handling registration. The cost will be $225 for the 3-day workshop with $100 due to hold your spot. I would encourage you to sign up promptly because there is a limit of 20 people and I think more than 20 have indicated interest in this.

I’ve asked Carl to cover drawing skills as they relate to painting and then on the 3rd day to switch to how you would apply those drawing skills to approaching a painting in any medium. So this workshop will be appropriate regardless of the medium in which you work. And it will be excellent for any level of painter.
Please call me or the gallery (249-4243) if you have any questions.

2011 Show:

Believe it or not we’ve already begun the preparations for next year’s show! The dates are September 30, October 1 and 2. The Patron’s Reception is the night of September 29. Artwork will be delivered on Wednesday September 28.

New for next year: thanks to Sheree Wanner at Camelot Gardens we’ve been offered the opportunity to do the clean up and set up on Tuesday September 27. That will make Wednesday the 28th, when we receive the show entries, a much, much smoother day.

Our judge for next year will be Jeanne Mackenzie. www.jeannemackenzie.com. She is an exceptionally well-known oil painter who has been featured in numerous art magazines and teaches workshops literally all over the world. And the good news is that she’s teaching a workshop for us before the show!

The workshop will be Sunday the 25th through Tuesday the 27th. Jeanne will be doing an introduction to the nuts and bolts of plein air painting along with a short plein air session to practice what we’ve learned. The last day she’ll be teaching about the appropriate use of photographs and how to create the freshness of a plein air piece with them, since that is what many of our members work with. Although Jeanne’s medium is primarily oils, this workshop, because of the subject matter, will be appropriate for any level of painter in any medium.

This workshop has also been planned in collaboration with Around the Corner Art Gallery and Pat and Bob will be handling registration. The cost for the 3 day workshop will be $175 as Jeanne gave us quite a price break.

Leslie will be doing a training session for show sitters on Monday the 26th. We will schedule that training session around the workshop’s lunch time so you can still sit the show and attend the workshop without missing anything.

It’s a bit early for signing up for this one, but you can mark it on your calendars and start saving for it. I’ll let you know when we open registration.

Demos:

Our November demonstration will be by Dani Tupper. In December we’ll be having our annual Christmas potluck/party.

Fund Raising:

The winner of Kathy Carter’s painting Canyon Sunset was our own Marty Simmons! Congratulations Marty and thank you again Kathy for donating the painting to the Guild. The framing was done for the Guild by Angela Roberts and we thank her, too!

We did have some notecard sales at the show, but we still have quite a few of them to sell. They make a wonderful gift, so remember birthdays and the holidays coming up. It’s $8 for a set of all 5 images or $2 for an individual card. They are available on Masterpiece Mondays and we’ll have them at the meeting on October 25th.

I’ve posted our current patrons on our website, our blog and at the bottom of this newsletter. We could use more patrons. Please support those businesses that have helped us and consider approaching a business you have a connection with to encourage it to become one of our patrons, too.

Art in Motion:

Please remember to let Geri know how many paintings you have at what business so she can get a correct listing. She’ll be turning this job over to our new Art in Motion coordinator in December and she needs to have things in good order so the switch can be made smoothly. 240-4616 gmgbates@msn.com

In addition, once the list is completed we will post it on our blog and our website. That gives you a bit of publicity.

During the next few months, please visit the location where your paintings are hanging. It’s your responsibility to see that they remain up on the wall and in good order. If you detect any issues, please let Geri know.

Art Instruction Videos:

We show an art instruction video on the first Monday of the month around 11 AM. This month we got things a bit out of sync with the show going on and I didn’t get the David Leffel video in time to show it. So we showed the November Sterling Edwards video instead. I will get the David Leffel video for the first Monday in November. Although the videos typically have demonstrations in one medium, the instruction given is usually beneficial in any media.

We are very fortunate to be able to show the video more than once. If you miss the first Monday or simply want to see the video again, please let me know. And, if you think of an artist you’d like to see in a video, please let me or one of the art instruction committee members know.

The video instruction committee will be meeting in the next few weeks to set up the schedule for the upcoming months and to move forward on the purchase of some videos. If you have a suggestion and haven’t passed it on, please let me know.

Upcoming Meetings, Kudos and Tidbits:

We had quite a few ribbon winners, including many blue ribbons, among our members at the annual show. Many of our members also won awards through the Montrose Arts Council, which judges the show separately from our judge, including Andrea LaPonsie who won their Best Amateur award. Frank Gauna and Jean Reed won People’s Choice awards and so did Frankie Hejny, whom many of you know. Heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to all our award winners!!

Our November meeting is the 22nd. The board will meet at noon and the general meeting will be at 1 PM. The demonstrator will be Dani Tupper showing us something of her swirling, colorful watercolors. Please remember that November has 5 Mondays and we meet on the 4th one, not the last one!!!!

Twyla Groswald and Roxanne Morris are in charge of November’s refreshments. Thank you Sybil Brannam and Leslie Rossman for the September refreshments. Sybil’s mints in the shape of an artist’s palette were a big hit both at the meeting and at the Patron’s reception.

Check out the Guild’s website to see the 4 member pages that are now up. You can have one, too, if you want one. Just get me about 6 images of your work and an artist’s statement/bio.

Please give me a call if I’ve missed something. So many people work behind the scenes each month to keep the Guild going strong and everyone’s efforts are appreciated. I don’t want to overlook anyone or anything that’s going on.
